Chapter 7

Chelsea was glad that not only had someone suggested a pack run, but that all the she-wolves had chosen to follow her up to the house. Once inside, she said, “Look, I’m fairly sure Dax will say something to the men, but I want all of you to know that nothing and no one will force you into anything, including a pairing. I know what that feels like, and I won’t tolerate it. If any of you ever needs to talk, the door is always open. Now let’s get out there and show those boys how a wolf runs.”

The she-wolves stripped quickly, shifted, and bounded out the door to be greeted by the men who expressed their appreciation for the she-wolves in their midst, but very respectfully. Had she been human, she would have smiled. Dax had obviously had a little talk with them.

Chelsea barked, charged Dax, and nipped him in the flank before racing up a wide path that rimmed the pineapple field and couldn’t be seen from the road or the sea. The pack—or perk—fell in behind her and she gloried in running free. She couldn’t remember if she’d ever shifted and run with a pack. She’d always been so controlled. The last time she’d shifted and just run to experience the incredible sense of freedom, she’d been alone and had still been more concerned with image than just the sheer joy that came with running as a wolf.

They ran up and around the planted fields, then down through some of the fallow ones. Wolves jockeyed for position, but all hung back and let her lead. It was exhilarating. She wondered why she’d kept herself from enjoying the liberty and delight that came from shifting into her more primal self and enjoying the way it felt to have different textures under her feet. She’d denied the need until it had become so great that she’d given into her craving. Chelsea ran an outer loop of the inner property ending up at the far end of the beach and galloping toward the camp.

Once they were at the tents, several of the more experienced wolves, including Dax, splashed into the salt water before rolling in the dry sand, using it to remove the last of the water. Chelsea barked at the she-wolves and nodded toward the house. They followed her inside and Chelsea went into her bedroom, then came back out after a minute dressed in a robe.

“It’s not much, but until we get your showers set up, and they will be separate, you’re all welcome to use the bath up here.”

The she-wolves shifted and Noelani pulled on her clothes. “I’m going to head back into town since I have to be at the restaurant in the morning. I let my landlord know I’d be leaving, and he asked how soon because he already knows of someone who’ll want my place. If it’s okay with all of you, I’d like to move to the plantation at the end of the week.
